I am the only person on my team in Portugal who handles code requests, and nearly all of them end up in SQL Server: SSIS packages, functions, links between databases, and imports and exports that somebody used to do by hand. Much of it feeds daily, weekly and monthly processes whose output goes to the Bank of Portugal, to regulators or to audits. The email alerts are generated by SQL itself and say what was processed, what was left out and why, instead of making someone go and look. I have also built internal tools in C# with ASP.NET Core so colleagues can reach the data without going through me, and I write a fair amount of XML: templates, formatting, generation. On the support side I handle 70 to 100 tickets a month, across data problems, permissions and server maintenance. What I learned the hard way was to decide on my own: I am the only one in my department at the Portugal branch with sensitive work and direct contact with the business areas.

A training programme, with most of the time left free to build small applications. There was no main project, and I spent most of the hours trying things out in Java, JavaScript, Python and C.

Curricular internship. I built the whole back end of Conversa-Amiga, working with colleagues from other countries, in Java 17 and Spring Boot 3 on microservices. The application replaced Word and Excel sheets used to track who needed help. What existed worked, but it meant searching by hand. I set up the API Gateway, Eureka and Zipkin so a call between services could be followed when something failed.

A three-year technical course. This is where I wrote my first real applications, in PHP, SQL and Java.
